There was a time when the most important thing someone like myself could have was a website. It was the only way someone could find out if you were any good. I used to have a company with a partner and we’d spend hours trying to figure out the best website design to get new clients. Then it stopped being super important. For a long time after that, I just needed a link to my reel on vimeo, but honestly I’m not sure if anyone really ever watched it. Word of mouth became the way I got most work. I imagine most people watched the first 10 seconds of my reel and then decided that was enough to show that whoever recommended me wasn’t lying.
Now, I pretty much work for one main client, and I don’t need to keep showing them my work. God, I should make sure they’re not just showing people my website without telling me. It’s been pretty terrible for a long time. Anyway, for a very long time it was important to only show the creative work I was paid for on my website. I even have a company name - Fridge Gallery Production House. My company is still going strong, but I no longer think I need to focus my website on it, so I’m going to experiment with this format. We’ll see how it goes.
